It is amazing to me the nebumr of children that have Facebook even though rules and federal laws prohibit children under age 13 to have them. I was recently confronted by my elementary school aged child why can’t I have Facebook, everybody at school has it, . This lead me to do some searching and she is correct. I quickly found that there are hundreds of local elementary school children on Facebook, all of which had to lie about their age to secure the account. Many even list their elementary school as their school of attendance.Perhaps the most shocking discovery was the nebumr of parents and teachers that condone this dangerous and lying practice. Many teachers were signed on as friends of these youth and often interacting with them.Facebook is a predators’ dream. What are we teaching children when we tell them it is ok to lie to gain access to be more social? . The age of 13 is mandatory requirement for a reason. Parents and teachers, your child/children could be the next one that is bullied online, tempted by immorally, exposed to adult topics, and yes, even sexually harmed.
